Making time for fun.
Despite the amount of work that does need to be completed, it’s essential to take breaks now and again. Despite having spent quite a bit of time in the Black Hills, we have always stayed pretty close to home. Just being at the cabin was the goal, but having more time means more adventures!
Summer in the Black Hills comes with all the classics and lots of options to spare. We are not the do it all types, so each of us picked one thing we wanted to do on our week staycation.

Once we assessed the best weather days, we started with Alayna’s ATV Day. Just like snowmobiling in the winter, the National Forest has endless road options for exploring via ATV or UTV. There are some rules and permits, so make sure to do your research, speak with a ranger, or work with someone, like Nate, who is well versed in the world of adventure logistics. Just to give you a sense of the options, below is 1 of 4 Motorized Vehicle Use Maps of Black Hills National Forest. We decided to take several of these squiggles and go on a few hour ride to Deerfield Lake. We packed a lunch and made a day of it.
